4. ‘The Coconut Grove’

Howzit…Howzit…lately it has been very very hot, so hot that I don’t feel like going outside.  The pattern is the same….check the surf report, surf and wind forecast, and tide…then decide when to surf.  This one day it was very hot, no surf, no wind so I decided to watch TV.  First it was a group of people talking about travel, then it was baseball, then news, then a variety program…4 hours passed and still watching.  Then I realized that I was really wasting my time and kind of being hypnotized that life is good and these are the things I need.  I have to be careful because I actually thought I needed to go out and get an Apple Watch.  And news is actually a combination of news and gossip.  Anyway, I started to think back when I was younger and we weren’t allowed to watch tv in the day…either go out and play, do chores, or study.  So when I would be at home I had an interest in Lateral Thinking Puzzles.  Lateral thinking puzzles are strange situations in which you are given a little information and then have to find the explanation.  This kind of puzzle teaches you to check your assumptions about any situation.  You need to be open-minded, flexible and creative in your questioning and able to put lots of different clues and pieces of information together.  Problems have many solutions but the best solution will leave you satisfied with the answer.  Logic puzzles have a set answer and utilize known skills but lateral thinking puzzles require creativity.  Here are some examples:

  1. You are driving down the read in your car on a wild, stormy night, when you pass by a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus:
    1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
    2. An old friend who once saved your life.
    3. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.

Knowing that there can only be one passenger in your car, whom would you choose?

  1. A man and his son are in a car crash. The father is killed and the child is taken to hospital gravely injured. When he gets there, the surgeon says, ‘I can’t operate on this boy – for he is my son!!!’ How can this possibly be?
  2. Why is it better to have round manhole covers than square ones?
  3. An American nightclub called ‘The Coconut Grove’ had a terrible fire in which over 400 people died. A simple design flaw in the building led to the death toll being so high. Subsequently, regulations were changed to ensure that all public buildings throughout the US eliminated this one detail which proved so deadly. What was it?
  4. A police officer saw a truck driver clearly going the wrong way down a one-way street, but did not try to stop him.  Why not?
  5. An advanced fighter bomber is about to drop its bombs over the enemy. The pilot presses the button to release the bombs but nothing happens. Why is this so?

OK…get out, head for the beach and go catch a wave…mostly don’t forget to support your local surf/ocean activity shop.  Until next time…”A hui hou…Malama Pono!!!

Solutions:

  1.  The old lady of course! After helping the old lady into the car, you can give your keys to your friend, and wait with your perfect partner for the bus.
  2. The surgeon can not operate on her own son; she is his mother.
  3. Round covers cannot be dropped or fall down a manhole, unlike square ones.
  4. The doors at ‘The Coconut Grove’ opened inward. In the mad panic to escape the fire, people were crushed against the doors and could not pull them open. After ‘The Coconut Grove’ disaster in 1942, all public buildings had to have doors which opened outward.
  5. The truck driver was walking.
  6. Plane was flying upside down.

4. The Coconut Grove
