Howzit Howzit…

A hui hou…Malama Pono!!!

Howzit Howzit…I need a new surfboard, but what kind of board should I get this time? My first board was a home made Gerry Lopez style diamond tail single fin shaped by my cousin…it was big and heavy (I called it Guava Jam), then I got a used Marc Richards style twin fin. Simon Anderson invented the Thruster but I still chose to stay with a New Chayne Horan Lazor zap style wing-keel single. In high school I saved enough money to order a custom board…at that time all the young surfers were getting custom boards and it was an identity thing to have a custom shape and air brushing. I remember spending hours in class just re-drawing the outline that I wanted and the perfect 3-size (nose, middle, and tail width) and the perfect air brush design. Pat Rawson was the shaper in demand so I knew my board would be a Local Motion. Other guys went to Ben Aipa at Surfline or Glen Minami at Town and Country.

My surfboards were the most important things to me (the stories you hear about girlfriends asking what is more important are true…ehehe). After picking up a new board I would invite all of my friends to my house, for BBQ and we would talk about how good the board was going to be. I would order a new board every year not knowing what I really would get until I got lucky and got a working for Local Motion. It was the best job because we would get to see new boards every day and could pick the best boards out of the batches and could try new surf designs. I made the mistake like most people did by getting off the boards with more volume made for carving and on the Momentum Generation skinny boards with lots of rocker for faster turns. The boards were quicker but we had to paddle harder and sacrifice drawing deeper lines.

Recently I found a free surfboard CAD program where I can design my dream board. It allows me to change every part of the board. It will even allow me to import airbrush designs. This program will even allow you to export your design to give to print a machine shape if you want. I’m not going that far because the professional shapers all have their formula that they have developed over the years so why take the chance. I am going to use it to give me a general idea of what I want and hopefully reduce guessing what I will get. This program is called boardCAD.

So out and get a new board and go catch a wave. And remember to support your local surf/ocean/mountain activity shop…. Until next time…”A hui hou…Malama Pono!!!
