Howzit…Howzit…元気？今年の冬は少し暖かかったのかな。僕は、いつもだったら11月でサーフィンをやめていたけれど、今年は2月を過ぎても海に入り続けていたよ。

ところで、「グーフィースタンス」の由来って考えたことある？
海から陸を見て、右方向に乗るのが「レギュラー」、左方向に乗るのが「グーフィー」だけど、なんで「左、レフト」という言葉の代わりに「グーフィー」を使うんだろう？

一般的な答えは、1937年のウォルトディズニーのアニメである「ハワイアンホリデー」に登場するグーフィーが右足を前にしてサーフボードに乗っていたから。

そしてもう1つは、グーフィースタンスが全体の30パーセントで、レギュラースタンスの方が70パーセントと多いからで僕もそう思っていた。「グーフィー」には、クレイジーだとか愚か者だという別の意味もあるんだ。

1964年から1982年の間、最後にマーク・リチャーズがチャンピオンとして君臨するまで、レギュラーの8人に対してグーフィーのチャンピオンはわずかに2人だけだった。
だけど、マーク・リチャーズ以降、その比は9対7になった。トム・キャロルが2連覇して以来、90年代はグーフィーが優勢になり、6人中4人のチャンピオンがグーフィーだったんだ。でも、2002年以降はグーフィーのチャンピオンはガブリエル・メディーナのみになっている。

数字を見ると、レギュラーのチャンピオンの方が多いと言えるけれど、統計的にレギュラーの方が多いからね。80年代までは、ライトブレイクでの試合が多く、今よりも長いボードをバックハンドで操らないといけなかったし、レギュラーの方が有利だったんだ。
ボードが短くなり、バックサイドの技術はより進化して、CJホブグッドが2001年に優勝してからは、ハンディキャップもほぼなくなった。

ただ、2002年から2016年までの15年間に1人しか王者になっていないのは、ケリー・スレーターが勝ち続けたからだというのも興味深いね。その他に3人のレギュラーフッターが勝ったけれど、グーフィーは誰も勝てなかった。この結果は、技術やスタンスの問題ではないと思う。
統計だけを見て言えることは、レギュラーフッターがチャンピオンになる確率はグーフィーに比べ2倍もあるんだ。

『Goofy Stance』
Howzit…Howzit…Winter is here and it is a bit warmer than normal…my usual surf season ends in November but this year it is now February and I’m still surfing. Have you ever wondered where they got the term, “goofy stance” when riding a board? People who surf with their right foot forward have a “regular” stance and left foot forward have a, “goofy stance.” But why use, “goofy,” instead of just, “Left”?

The common response is that the term “goofy stance” originated from the 1937 Walt Disney cartoon titled, “Hawaiian Holiday,” in which Goofy goes surfing with his right leg in front of the surfboard. But I always thought that the term came from the fact that there are more “regular stance” surfers than “goofy stance”, 70% to 30%. Goofy is a slang term meaning, “crazy or silly” so the fact that surfers with their right foot forward is, “goofy”. You be the judge…

From 1964 to 1982, to the end of MR’s reign as champ, the regulars SWAMPED the goofies, eight champs to two. After MR up until now the number has balanced 9 to 7. From Tom Carroll’s first win in 1983/4, goofies have gained an edge, six champs to four but between 01 and 2014 there was only one goofy stance champion, Gabriel Medina.

Looking at the numbers, you can say that there are more regular stance champions but this is statistically expected because there are more regular stance surfers. Up until the 80s, regular stance surfers had the advantage because more contests were held at right breaking spots and longer boards made it a challenge for backsliders. As the board sizes shortened and backside ripping developed more and more, the handicap diminished, Up until CJ Hobgoods win in ’01. It is interesting that from ’02 to ’16 there has been only one goofy winner (in 15 years) thanks mostly in part to Kelly Slater. There are 3 regular stance surfers who won 3 or more times to 0 for goofies. These stats do not look at skill and focus on stance. Just looking at the statistics (nothing on skill) I would say that a regular footer is twice as probable to win the championship.
