Howzit…Howzit…

Howzit…Howzit…Winter is here and it is a bit warmer than normal…my usual surf season ends in November but this year I’m still surfing. I have been in Japan for over 14 years now but still have not gotten used to surfing in the Winter. The main reason is that my feet freeze even wearing boots. The problem is that I can’t feel my board and lose control. Also, after doing a couple of, “duck dives” my brain freezes. I really respect the surfers who endure all of this and enjoy winter surfing. Winter time, for me, turns into, “A time to play in the snow,” by snowboarding. Growing up in Hawaii we would always find ways to go and play in the snow. I started snowboarding 20 years ago on a trip to Montana. All my close friends were there for our good friend’s wedding (my sempai who taught me how to surf). We took a half day lesson and hit the slopes in the afternoon. I just remember not knowing how to turn so I just did big bottom turns. Out of control but it was really fun to just put everything on the edge and feel the speed. From that moment on…all of us were hooked onto snowboarding. We all decided that we would make a yearly trip a series of trips that we called, “Boarding with the Boys”…I think we took 5 trips. Anyway we all were surfers so our style was surfing and we would only look for banks to do carves and powder to surf. I think the term we used was being “Powder whores”. These trips were our time to be boys again, and forget about all of our responsibilities. All of us have different careers but our common bond was surfing. And now surfing carried over to snowboarding. All of us first started surfing together and now snowboarding together. We used to push each other to improve in surfing and that carried over to snowboarding. We only know how to surf so our snowboarding was just an extension of that. And that is exactly what we wanted to do on the snowboard. Not so many tricks but more carving. All we wanted to do was go fast and carve in powder. Snowboarding on powder feels the closest to surfing because of the floating feeling.

Gerry Lopez took his love for surfing and translated it into surfing on snow. Gerry produces a Big Wave Challenge at Mt. Bachelor in Oregon. This contest is a surfing contest, not on water but on snow. 2016 was the 6th time he held the contest. The contest mixes surf and snowboard mentalities on a course designed for “freestyle snowboars snow-surfing” This past year’s course included seven frozen wave features so riders could slash, spray, carve, and spin. The format is a best of two run and judging focuses on the same elements of big wave surf contest…power, control, and speed. Over 200 riders from all over the world attended…even featuring the Gentemstick rippers from Japan.

It was great to see surfing style scoring more points than air and spin tricks!
