A hui hou…Malama Pono!!!

Weapons of Mass Destruction

Howzit…Howzit…President Obama came to Japan for the G-7 summit and he visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. There was a lot of talk about it good and bad and I don’t want to go into it also and I don’t want to write anything political. I want to say something about how visiting Hiroshima Peace Memorial changed my life.

My first ever trip to Japan was right after I graduated college. I was just starting out my career as a computer programmer, still didn’t know what direction I wanted to go into. At that time the internet was in its infancy and computer work was mostly programming as a Department of Defense (DoD) government contractor or information systems development in the private sector. So I had to make a decision to help make DoD programs and have a secure future (medical insurance, guaranteed pay raise, secured retirement) or go the public business route and maybe be successful depending on the business. Working for DoD would mean I would be contributing to the defense effort…more on this later.

Anyway after arriving at the Hiroshima JR station we caught the bus heading to the memorial but got off by the central park by mistake. We walked along the river to the Dome and it was actually good because we got to see the entire area and could see all the way to the mountains. Next we saw the main memorial and the children peace monument. Finally we reached the museum. The museum has changed but at that time at the entrance there was a map showing ground zero and a replica of the bomb. The first thing that I noticed was that the destruction went all the way back to the mountains. Immediately in my mind I remembered how far away the mountains were. Then I looked at the bomb which wasn’t so big and thought to myself, “…this thing did all of this damage?”

In school we study about Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the facts are all true but we read from books and see movies…up until that time I had no concept of how devastating the destruction was. The numbers of people who were affected was just a number. But to see everything in scale with my own eyes had a big impact on me.

I said to myself, regardless of the decisions to use the bomb, the main point is that this kind of weapon should not exist purely for the damage that it can do. I also thought to myself that every human being should see this memorial! From that moment I decided to use my programming skills to help people. I didn’t choose DoD and one of the reasons for creating Wavehunter was to provide needed information to keep people safe.

Now with that, it is summer and hot as heck, get out of the city and go catch a wave. And remember to support your local surf/ocean activity shop… Until next time…”A hui hou…Malama Pono!!!
