2月に開催されたインタースタイルにて、Futures.より水に浮くほど軽いフィン『Vapor Core フィン』が発表された。インタースタイルに合わせて来日したFutures.社CEOであるビンス氏が、このフィンについて語った。
Please tell us about your latest Vapor Core line, and what is so unique and special about it?
今回、新たに開発されたVapor Core Fin について、その特徴を教えてください。
The Vapor core line represents a completely new way to build fins. It is a highly accurate and repeatable process that we developed here in Huntington Beach. It changes the direct relationship between flex and foil thickness, so that we can have a thicker more powerful foil within a fin with a lot of flex. It also more control and options to design flex into the fin without having to change the foil thickness.
Vapor Core フィンは、過去に例の無い全く新しい方法で製造されています。ここハンティントンビーチで企画・開発され、とても緻密な生産プロセスを経て、フィンのフレックスとフォイルの数値上の直接的な関係を見直し、フィン内部にフレックスを持たせる構造により、強靭なしなりを得ることが可能となりました。そして、フォイルに厚みを与え、コントロール性能が更に高くなるように設計されています。
Please give us some insight on the what makes these Vapor Core fins float, and how fin weight plays an important role in your surfing?
Vapor Core Fin は、なぜ水に浮くのですか？そのフィンの軽さがサーフィンにどのような効果をもたらすかを聞かせてください。
The Vapor core fins float due to their hollow core and their light weight. When the surfer is pumping to generate speed light fins allow the board to respond quicker to the pump and come back under the feet faster. Light fins help balance the weight of the board which allows the board to carry more speed through the cut back, and will give the board a much more balanced feel in the air.
Vapor Core Fin は、中空コアにより水に浮くほど軽量化されています。サーファーが軽いフィンをセットし、ポンピングすればスピードを得ることが容易になります。その時、ボードはポンピングに対し、その荷重にレスポンス良く反応し スピードが増します。
軽いフィンはボードのウェイトバランスを保つ役割があるので、よりスピードに乗ったカットバックを可能にし、エアーの際もボードのバランスフィールが非常に高くなります。
What was the inspiration behind the invention of Vapor Core?
Vapor Coreの開発の裏側には、どのようなインスピレーションがありましたか？
It is the same as what inspires me to come to futures every morning. We have the ability to innovate, design and push limits of what is possible under our own roof which leads to products that greatly enhance our experience in the water.

Which team riders were involved in the research and development of these Vapor Core Fins?
Vapor Core Fin の研究開発に関わったチームライダーを教えてください？
John John helped a lot with the development of the foils on this line and briefly tested before he got hurt last year. Pretty much the whole team was involved with the testing and feedback from local pros like Bret Simpson, to Ethan Ewing , Jack Freestone, Michel Bourez , Conner and Parker Coffin, Reef Mcintosh to name a few.
ジョン・ジョンは、このラインでのフォイル開発に大きく関わり、昨年 怪我をする前までテストをしていました。
それ以外では、ブレット・シンプソンのような地元のプロや、イーサン・ユーイング、ジャック・フリーストーン、ミッシェル・ボーレッズ、コナー、パーカー・コフィン、リーフ・マッキントッシュ達もテストとフィードバックを繰り返し、開発に関わってくれました。
Compared to other fins, briefly explain the difference in the feeling of the new Vapor Core?
他のフィンと比較して、新しいVapor Coreのフィーリングの違いを簡単に説明してください。
The vapor core fins are like a loaded spring. The harder you push on them the quicker they will spring back. The refined thicker foil will give a very smooth predictable feel on the drop and out of the first bottom turn it gives an explosive feel. Hard to explain but easy to feel.
Vapor Core Fin は、荷重のかかったバネのようなものです。強く押すほど その跳ね返り(戻る力)が速くなります。
緻密に計算された厚みのあるフォイルデザインは、波のフェイスを滑り下りる際に、とてもスムースで予想通りのフィーリングを得られ、最初のボトムターンから、伸びのある躍動感を与えてくれます。言葉で説明するのは難しいですが、その違いを感じやすいフィンです。
What sort of board and waves is this Vapor Core line suited best for? What sort of surfer would be able to enjoy this fin?
Vapor Coreラインは、どのようなボードと波に最適ですか？ また、どのようなサーファーがこのフィンが適していますか？
The current vapor core line is all thrusters but we plan to offer twin fins next. The ride # measure a 5 with an added spark of the spring, so it is a good all around fin for most conditions. Any surfer that can link a bottom turn with a top will benefit from the vapor core fins.
現状のVapor Core ラインは全てスラスター(トライフィン)で、3つのコンセプトに分かれたアウトラインがあり、それぞれS,M,Lの3サイズがラインナップされていますが、今後ツインフィンもマーケットに向けてリリースする予定です。
スラスターのライドナンバー(futures 独自の数字でフィンのバランスを表す) は “5” なので、オールラウンドにマッチします。それに加えバネのような瞬発力をフィン自体が持っているので、ボトムターンとトップターンをリンクできるサーファーならば、Vapor Core Fin の恩恵を受けることができるでしょう。

I am very excited that we are releasing the new vapor core line in Japan first. The quality and design of this fin fits well with the surfing culture of Japan. I think the loaded spring feel of this fin will be a good match for the typical wave conditions in Japan. We have been working on this fin technology for about 8 years so having it come to market feels really good.
日本のインタースタイルショーで、世界に先駆けてVapor Core Fin を発表できたことが非常に嬉しく思います。このフィンのコンセプト、性能、そしてデザインは、日本のサーフカルチャーにも、とてもマッチすると感じています。このフィンの特徴であるバネのような瞬発力のあるフレックスは、日本の波質にもジャストフィットすることでしょう。私たちは、このVapor Core Fin の開発に約8年間取り組んできましたので、その技術の結晶を市場に発信できることは、とても光栄な事です。
