本日のノース、昨日までのゴージャスウエザーとは打って変わり、

朝から雨、、、風もノーザリーにまた戻っちまった〜〜〜

パイププロジュニア＆ウーメンプロともポストフォン。

にゃので今日はノーシュートでした。

３月と言えば、今もそうだが、舞台はオーストラリア。

かつてはこの時期になると、長期のオーストラリア取材を敢行していた事を思い出す。

中でも１９８０年代後期に、３月〜５月までの３ヶ月かけて、

クィーンズランドからニューサウスウエルズ、ヴィクトリア、サウスオーストラリア、

そしてウエスタンオーストラリアまで流浪の旅をしたことが懐かしい。

その旅の一部である、サウスコーストトリップの手記をチェケラ〜〜〜

March, time for the stage in Australia.

I remember about traveling to Australia for a long period in this season.

Specially traveled around in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and

Western Australia during March~May in the late 1980′s.

So please have a check about my record during my South Coast trip~~~

１９８０年代の後半、オーストラリアを３ヶ月かけて、クィーンズランド州から、

ニューサウスウェールズ、ヴィクトリア、サウスオーストラリア、

そしてウエスタンオーストラリアまで、

くまなくサーフサーチしながらの旅を敢行したことがある。

クィーンズランドではバーレーを中心に、ヴィクトリアではトーキーを中心に、

コンテストのフォローも兼ねた取材で、

サーファーは負けた順でフリーセッションに参加するやり方だった。

オーストラリアンレッグの最終戦はナラビーンだった。

一緒に動いていたナオト（スズキ）とコッツ（コウツサ）は、

例によって（？）早々に敗れ、帰国までの残りの日々を、

どこか波のいいとこに行こうということになった。

別部隊で来ていたヌマも誘い、フォトグ／ポール.サージェントが、

サウスコーストのアラダラに行けと勧めてくれ、ローカルにも連絡しておいてくれた。

In the late 1980′s, I’ve traveled all around in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia

and Western Australia.

In Queensland, I started shooting in Burleigh and, in Victoria, I started shooting in Torquay.

I was following with the competition site and went inside the free session.

The last competition site was in Narrabeen.

Naoto & Kotsusa, who was moving along with me lost really fast so

we decided to go somewhere else to find some good points to surf.

Got Numa into my group and Paul Sargeant/ Photographer recommended

to go to Ulladulla and arranged it for us.

コンテストサイトのナラビーンを発ち、シドニーを抜け、

のんびり皆でサウスコーストのアラダラを目指した。

ウーロンゴングを過ぎると、本当にカントリーカントリーで、

自然豊かなオーストラリアーナてな感じで、途中のガススタでミートパイを買ったり、

カンガルーちゃんが道を横切って行ったり、美しい湖や山、川に見とれたりしながら、

アラダラの手前にある、サセックスインレットという所を目指した。

Left Narrabeen and went toward Ulladulla in South Coast.

After Wollongong, places were all country side and

drove through these beautiful Australian natures and kangaroos and

headed toward to this place called Sussex Inlet near Ulladulla.

サセックスインレットには、オーシャン＆アースの本部があり、

当時スポンサーされていたコッツが予めコンタクトを取っていたのだ。

メインのパシフィックハイウェイから、左に折れ、

深いユーカリ並木の道を下って行くと、サセックスのこじんまりとした町が見えてきた。

ヒュージファクトリーを持つオーシャン＆アースを見つけるのは、

この小さな海辺の町ではたやすかった。

社長のブライアン.クリーガンが、オージーらしい気さくな笑顔で迎えてくれ、

早速用意されたビーチの目の前のバンガローにチェックインした。

In Sussex Inlet, there’s Ocean & Earth’s HQ so

Kotsusa, who was it’s supporter made a contact before we go there.

Turned left from the Pacific Highway and after we drove through the trees,

here there is the small lovely town, Sussex.

It was really easy to find Ocean & Earth’s huge factory in this small town.

Ocean & Earth’s chairman, Brian Cregan welcomed us and

checked into a cottage on front of the beach.

ログハウスのロッジで、木の香りがして、

キッチンもベッドも綺麗で広くて言うことなしだった。

更に、目の前にはライトのポイントブレイクが炸裂していた～

ブライアンは、かつてゲッコーというニックネームで、

プロツアーを回っていた事もあり、

映画”バンドオンザラン”の主役４人

（ラビット、ポール.ニールセン、ブルース.レイモンド、そしてゲッコー）

の一人に抜擢され、世界中の波で、フィルミングされたこともあるサーファーだ。

選手を引退し、地元サセックスでこのオーシャン＆アースを始め、

今や世界ナンバーワンのサーフアクセサリーを誇る企業にのし上げたのだった。

バンドオンザランの頃は、あだ名の如く、トカゲの様な細身だったが、

この時にはすでにポッチャリしたオッチャンだった。

Cottage was made out of logs so we could smell the tree and

kitchen and beds were nice enough.

Also, there was a righty point break breaking in front of us~

Brian was once surfing in the Pro Tour with a nickname called “Gecko” and

he was also one of the main character of the movie called “Band on the Run”.

After he retired from the front line, he started the Ocean & Earth in Sussex and

made this company to a world known company .

In the movie, Brian was skinny like a gecko but

now… Pretty chubby for sure.

丁度スエルが入ってきた様なので、翌朝一緒にアラダラに行こうということになり、

俺等は夕飯前に軽くロッジ前のポイントでサーフした。

沖に出ると、ドセットはファッキンサッキン、４～５フィートのバカっ掘れ～～～

ここまでの一ヶ月近い、オーストラリアの旅の中でも、一番のヘビーウエイブだった～～

アラダラに行かなくても、ここで良いんじゃない？とまで思わせた、

サセックスインレット、、、恐るべし、、、

Swell started to fill in with us so we decided to go to Ulladulla tomorrow and

we surfed in the point front of us for this day.

When we got out, sets were around 4~5ft~~~

Heaviest wave I’ve seen in this Australia trip~~~

I even thought we don’t really need to go to Ulladulla.

Gnarly Sussex…

翌朝、もち夜明けとともに動き出し、目の前のブレイクも気になったが、

ブライアンに連れて行かれるまま、更に南、アラダラ方面に向かった。

アラダラの町を過ぎてすぐの所で、丘の上から海をチェックすると、、、

写真のラインアップが目に飛び込んできた～

ブルースカイ、ブルーオーシャン、オフショア、４～６フィートパーフェクション！！

Next morning, we were curious about the front break but

Brian took us to Ulladulla area.

When we checked the ocean from the hill,

this line up above came into our eyes~~

Blue sky, blue ocean, offshore and 4~6 ft perfection.

ブライアンもやったね～という顔で、板とウエットを持って、丘を降りて行った。

オージーはこうやってビーチに荷物を持っていき、そこで着替えるというスタイルが常だ。

俺等も板、カメラ機材を持って丘を降りて行くと、ややジュクジュクしたとこで、

俺はカメラを持ったまま滑って転んで、そのまま下まで落っこちてしまった。

かなりあせったが、ジーパンがドロドロになった程度で、怪我することなく、

カメラもしっかり手にしてたので、早速撮影に入った。

Even Brian was surprised about it so he took his wet suit and his board down the hill.

Aussies usually takes their stuff down to the beach and get changed there.

So we took our gears down to the beach as well but I slipped while I was walking

through the mud and fell down.

Luckily I didn’t get hurt and I had my camera in my hand so started our session.

ボミーズとはアウトサイドのことで、ここだけではなく、

どこにでもボミーズという名称はある。

岸からパドルするとポイントに辿り着くのに１０分くらいはかかる。

しかしチャンネルはしっかりしていて、スモールサンセットのようなブレイクを魅せ、

インサイドボウルはなかなかの迫力を醸し出していた。

Bommies means outside so this point isn’t the only Bommies in the world.

Takes around 10 minutes paddle to the point.

But channel showed us a break like Sunset kind and

inside bowl looked pretty groovy.

ローカルでかなりスタイリッシュなサーフィンをするサーファーを見かけた。

名前はマイケル.マッキー、アラダラ出身のシェーパー／サーファーで、

フォトグのサージが事前に連絡を入れておいてくれたのは、まさしく彼だった。

ブライアンもまだまだ現役で、かなりいいサーフィンを魅せてくれた。

ブライアンは仕事で早々に上がって行ったが、俺等はあまりの波の良さに、

丸一日そこに居てしまった程だった。

かなりローカル色の強いポイント、エリアだと感じたが、

マイケルやブライアンのおかげで、嫌な思いをすることなく、

アラダラでサーフする事が出来たことは有り難かった。

We found a local surfer who was surfing with a stylish style.

Name was Michael Mackie. He’s a surfer/ shaper in Ulladulla and

he was the one who Sargeant contacted for us before we came here.

Brian was still young so he showed us some nice surfing but

he had to leave earlier for his work.

But we stayed there for all day long.

This point was pretty much a local kind point but

we didn’t feel bad, thank to Michael & Brian and

enjoyed our surfing in Ulladulla.

アラダラはサーフタウンで、道沿いにはいくつもサーフショップが立ち並ぶ、

サウスコーストのメッカのようだ。

サイズが下がれば、もう少し南に下がった所にあるフラットロックと呼ばれる所も、

ロッキーポイントの様で、アクションには最適の所だった。

そして夕方、サセックスのロッジに戻れば、サクっと目の前のブレイクをサーフ。

しかし、もうあの初日のヘビーブレイクの姿を魅せる事は無かった、、、

Ulladulla is a surf town so there were many surf shops along the streets.

If the size gets smaller, there’s this place called Flat Rock and

this place was pretty much a Rocky kind action point.

After we got back to our cottage, we surfed at the front break but

that heavy break from the first day never appeared again…

このサウスコーストのショートトリップは、

俺の数ある旅の中でもかなり思い出深いものの一つだ。

当時旬だったナオトやコッツに、ヤングアップカマーのヌマが加わり、

皆のメロウな性格も手伝って、終始いいムードで旅を過ごす事が出来た。

This trip in South Coast is one of the unforgettable

trip in my whole life.

Enjoyed this trip with Naoto, Kotsusa and Numa with their

slow mellow mood.

サススコーストからシドニーに戻り、明日は選手皆が帰国、

お別れとなる前夜、悪名高きキングスクロスにくりだし飲んで食ってはしゃいでいたら、

コッツがレンタカーの鍵をなくしちまいやがった～～

あの恐ろしい新宿歌舞伎町の様なキングスクロスの入った店を皆で片っ端から探して回り、

もう見つからなくてどうしようと諦めモードになっていた所、

俺はもう一度コッツと最後に行ったストリップ劇場に入り、
座っていたと思われる椅子の辺りを探ったら、

なんと折りたたみの間に引っかかっていますた～～ナンヤネ～～～ン！！！

そんなこんなで、とにもかくにも鍵も見つかり、

キングスクロスを出る時はもうすでに夜も明けてしまっていたのじゃ～

We went back to Sydney and our flight to Japan was the next day.

When we were drinking and eating all night,

Kotsusa lost our car’s key so we had to look all around the bars and restaurant we went in.

And we were about to give up but

when me and Kotsusa looked around the seats we were sitting at the strip club,

our car key was there~~~!!

So we finally made it out from the town~~

その日の午後、皆をシドニー空港に無事送り届け、

俺は次なるディスティネーション、サウスオーストラリアのストリッキーベイを目指すため、

一人シドニーからアデレードに飛んだのであった～～

I dropped off all of the surfers at Sydney Airport and

I flew to the next destination, Adelaide.

このトリップで、ナオトは当時のサーフィンワールドで初カバーを飾り、

アップカマーのヌマとは初めて一緒にトリップし、

その後”キンチャンツアー”にはなくてはならない存在に成長し、

コウツサはハワイ／ノースショアででも、

どんどんとビッグウエイブでドミネイトしてくるサーファーとなっていった。

今は皆、おのおののサーフショップを営みながらサーフィンライフを送っているが、

こんな痛快に、燃えるだけ燃えた、時、旅を共有してきたんだということが、

やっぱりかけがえのない財産だったということなんだね〜〜感謝。

Naoto got on the cover page by this trip and

Numa was a upcomer in this time but he grew up as a main

memeber of my tour.

Kotsusa started to dominate in North Shore.

Everyone is enjoying own surfing life

but I could tell our treasure was sharing this time with each other

and traveled through in one piece.
